Extending and extruding walls
Learn how wall extension and boundary extrusion work in OhmCAD.
Two related workflows#
OhmCAD has two wall-growth workflows:
- Centerline extension grows a canonical wall from its start or end.
- Boundary extrusion grows material from a selected wall boundary or edge.
Both keep the existing wall as one wall object when the edit is saved.
Extend a wall#
- Select a wall.
- Press E.
- Choose the endpoint or reference line offered by the extension guides.
- Move the pointer to define the new length and direction.
- Click, Space or Enter to finish.
Use Shift to snap the angle. Press L to enter a fixed length. Press D to toggle dimensions. Press Escape to cancel.
Continue extending#
When placing an extension, Ctrl/Cmd+click keeps the extension tool active so you can continue from the updated wall instead of selecting the wall again.
Boundary extrusion#
Boundary extrusion is used when the selected guide is a wall boundary rather than a simple endpoint. OhmCAD builds new wall material from that boundary and unions it with the existing polygon. This is useful for adding a protruding wall section, recess or custom shape.
Snapping and validation#
Wall extension uses the editor snapping system and angle constraints. The final geometry is validated before it is saved. If the wall would collapse or cross itself, OhmCAD rejects the update and keeps the previous wall.
Practical example#
- Draw a rectangular wall loop.
- Select one side.
- Press E.
- Move from an offered boundary guide to create a protrusion.
- Use Shift if you need a straight horizontal or vertical result.
- Click to place and Enter to save when required by the active flow.
Common problems#
- If nothing starts, another tool may still be active. Press Escape first.
- If the preview disappears, the proposed wall geometry is invalid.
- If doors or windows move after extension, OhmCAD is reconciling hosted openings to the changed wall.
